Oslo

59.9139° N, 10.7522° Ecityhistoryartmuseumsroyal

Norway's fjord-head capital — a low, walkable city of forested hills, waterfront saunas and a boldly modern skyline.

Oslo grew up in a clearing where a river met the fjord, in the shadow of Akershus, the medieval castle that guarded the harbour. After a great fire in 1624 the Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV rebuilt the town in brick beside the fortress and renamed it Christiania; it kept that name until 1925. As the young nation's capital after 1814, it filled with broad avenues, a royal palace and national museums. Today around 720,000 people (2024) live between the forest and the water, and the old brick core now frames a skyline of glass and white stone.

Constitution Day (17 May)

Every 17 May the city becomes a river of flags and folk costume as children parade to the Royal Palace — a birthday party for the whole nation.

Best time to visit
May to August for long, light-filled days, island ferries and the huge 17 May celebrations; winter is dark and cold but brings snow to the city's ski trails.
