Vatican City

41.9025° N, 12.4525° Ehistoryartarchitecturecity

The world's smallest country — a walled enclave of Renaissance art and Baroque grandeur at the heart of Rome.

Vatican City is a sovereign state of just 0.49 km² and about 882 residents (2024), ruled by the pope and ringed by walls inside Rome. On the spot where Nero's circus once stood — and where St Peter was said to be martyred — grew the seat of the Catholic Church. Today Michelangelo's dome crowns St Peter's Basilica, his frescoes blaze across the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums hold one of the greatest art collections on earth — all within a ten-minute walk.
