Namsos

64.4663° N, 11.4956° Ehistorynaturemusicmuseumscoast

A rebuilt fjord-mouth town where one of Norway's finest salmon rivers, a proud rock-music scene and a working sawmill museum meet.

Namsos grew where the Namsen — central Norway's great salmon river — empties into the fjord, and the timber that floated down its current built the town: chartered in 1845, it boomed on sawmills and shipping. In April 1940 German bombers flattened almost the entire wooden town during the Allied Namsos Campaign, and it was rebuilt from scratch in brick and clean, modern lines. Today this compact town of about 13,000 (2024) is known for three things: the salmon river, a proud "Rock City" music scene, and the sawmill museum that keeps its timber past alive.

Salmon angling

Fishing the Namsen's famous beats is a summer ritual here, drawing anglers ever since Victorian "salmon lords" first cast a line.

Best time to visit
June to August brings mild, green weather, the salmon season on the Namsen, and near-endless daylight this far north — midsummer nights barely darken. Winters are long, cold and dark but quiet; time a visit to the town's summer music events if you can.
